Obituary of Gregory A Atwater

Gregory A. Atwater, 71, of Vermilion, died Friday, April 26, 2019 at his home after a sudden illness.

Greg was a man who could light up a room with his smile and infectious laughter. He had unique ways of greeting others with such phrases as “What’s goin’ on in here?”, “Who’s in my house?” or “How do?”. He delivered them in a way that sparked laughter every time.

His family and friends were everything to him. His proposal to his wife included “Let’s send some kids to college.” He cherished his wife, Kathleen (nee Maiden), and set a beautiful example for his kids and grandkids about how to love and be loved. He spent countless hours in the front yard of their home playing catch with a baseball, football and basketball with his kids.  He was a practical man who sometimes bragged about how long his flip phone would hold a charge.  Possessions meant nothing to him, but he proudly owned a stereo system because of its ability to shake the walls of the house when played at a loud volume. Greg was known to use this system to wake up his teenage children on Saturday mornings by blaring Queen or Juice Newton’s Angel of the Morning.

Greg will be remembered by all who knew him for his strong core of principles and his honorable and selfless spirit. He did not want for anything for himself other than what he needed. He enjoyed mentoring many young people throughout his life. He enjoyed umpiring baseball games across Lorain County and was a referee for Vermilion Basketball games. A huge sports enthusiast, Greg enjoyed boating, fishing, golfing, and riding his motorcycle. He was an avid Ohio State University football fan and especially enjoyed attending The Ohio State University Marching Band skull sessions. As a food lover, Greg enjoyed new restaurants and was always interested in hearing about new places to enjoy. He fancied himself as a master chef, Greg loved to cook (especially seafood) and was always the center of attention when preparing Thanksgiving meals for his large extended family. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Vermilion.

Born July 1, 1947 in Sturgis, MI, he was raised in Howe, Indiana and has lived in Vermilion for the past 49 years.  He graduated from Adrian College, MI where he met the love of his life. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Kathleen of Vermilion; daughters, Stacie (Shaun) Roof of Granville, OH and Stefanie (Victoria Spurgeon) Atwater of Lima, OH; son, Kristopher (Trish) Atwater of Rocky River, OH; 9 grandchildren, his sister, Judy (Keith) Newcomer of LaGrange, IN and many nieces and nephews.

Greg served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Ohio Army National Guard and worked for Ford Motor Co.; Lorain Printing Company and Penske.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Betty Jane (nee Horner) Atwater.

The family will receive friends at Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion, Ohio on Thursday, May 2, 2019 from 4:00 PM until the time of the funeral service at 7:00 PM.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Vermilion Recreation Department, 5511 Liberty Ave, Vermilion, OH 44089.
