David Nitchman, 85, of Wakeman, died Sunday, June 28, 2020 at his home after a lengthy illness.
He was born June 4, 1935 in Berea and had been a Wakeman resident for the past 40 years.
David graduated from Berea High School and Baldwin-Wallace University.
David worked as a Physical Education and Heath teacher for Sheffield-Sheffield Lake City Schools for 30 years retiring in 1988. David also owned and operated the Shade Garden Greenhouse where he had over 100 varieties of hostas and wonderful begonias.
David was an accomplished horticulturist and was featured in the Cleveland Plain Dealer on several occasions. When he wasn't working in the greenhouse, David enjoyed his Lyman boat and building model ships that were displayed in the Great Lakes Historical Society Museum in Vermilion. He had exceptional carpentry skills building everything from a small sail boat for his children to their family home on Banks Street.
He is survived by his sons, Mark (Cathy) Nitchman of Kingston, WA and Craig Nitchman of Wakeman; his grandchildren: Rachel, Andrew, Colleen, Erin, Joseph and Thomas; and his great-grandchildren, Elinor and Everett.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Marie Nitchman in 2006; parents, Herman "Joseph" and Neva Nitchman; a son, Todd Nitchman; and his brother, Gary.
