Obituary of Margarita Vandengoorbergh

Margarita "Rita" Vandengoorbergh (nee Mihalis), 77, of Vermilion, passed away Monday, December 28, 2020 at Stein Hospice in Sandusky. She was born July 4, 1943 in Elyria and had been a Vermilion resident for the past 31 years moving from Lorain and Elyria. Margarita worked for First American Companies as a Forensic Auditor managing 6 states, retiring in 2008. She was a member of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, Lorain, AMVET Post #22 Ladies Auxiliary, and the Lorain County Art Council where she served on the Board of Directors as the Secretary. Rita was also on the Board of directors for the Visiting Nurses Association and she was one of the founding members and served on the Board of Directors of the Lorain County Urban League. Rita served as past President of the Elyria Republican Women's Club, and she was a former member of the Lorain County Republican executive. Rita and her husband Joe, remained very active with AMVETS. She is survived by her sons, Bill (Michele) Ward of Avon and Michael (Jill) Vandengoorbergh of AZ; her grandchildren, William, Julia, and Elizabeth Ward, Joseph and Michael Vandengoorbergh, and; sister, Rosalie Mihalis of Elyria; sisters in law Dita Holegraat, Juke Haveman, and Jeanne Vandengoorbergh; and her brother in law, Hank Haveman, She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Cornelis Vandengoorbergh in 2009; parents, Samuel and Wilma (nee Keramidis) Mihalis; brother, Stephen Mihalis; and a nephew, Steve Mihalis and niece, Christine Smith. Friends and family who want to come are welcome to attend, but due to Covid-19, we are asking that people be careful to maintain social distancing, wear masks, and refrain from embracing. The family will receive friends on Monday at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street Vermilion Ohio on , January 4, 2021 from 10:00 AM to 12:00PM. Funeral Mass will follow at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, 2000 Tower Blvd., Lorain, OH. at 1:00PM Father Michael Gulgas will officiate. Interment will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery.
