Obituary of John Moes

John Moes, 70, of Vermilion, died peacefully at his home Friday, May 21, 2021 after a brief illness and a protracted battle with cancer. He was born October 27, 1950 in Lorain and was a lifelong Vermilion resident. He was an avid boater and fisherman. He attended sail camp at Vermilion Boat Club as a youth and started working for his family's boatyard, Moes Marine Service, at an early age. He graduated Vermilion High School in 1969 and briefly attended the University of Rhode Island before returning home to work full time as a co-owner of Moes Marine. There, he mastered his woodworking and fine finishing skills on antique wooden boats. Outside of work, he enjoyed applying this art to his home, furniture, birdhouses, and other creative projects. John married Linda James of Amherst. John was devoted to his family, particularly to his parents and his son, Nathaniel (Nat). He mentored his nephews at the boatyard and had a close relationship with his niece, Molly. He was delighted by grandson, Jesse, born in 2019 to Nat and his wife, Elizabeth. He also fostered a sense of community among Moes Marine customers and enjoyed many long friendships there. John was a dedicated golfer and spent much time on the links weekly with friends during his semi-retirement years. He was a die-hard Cleveland sports fan, looking forward every year to the start of baseball season especially. He also loved watching men’s and women’s college basketball and the March Madness NCAA tournaments. He had extensive collections of music and books, and was a voracious reader. In particular, he cultivated a deep knowledge of maritime history and the War of 1812. He is survived by his son, Nathaniel (Elizabeth) Moes of Westerville, Ohio; grandson, Jesse Moes; brother, Tom (Carolyn) Moes of Vermilion; sister, Pam (the late Greg) Gregory of Vermilion; niece, Molly Gregory; nephews, Mike and Geoff Moes; and his former wife, Linda J.
