Obituary of David A Basinski

David A Basinski, 83, of Vermilion, passed away with peace and dignity Friday, August 6, 2021 at Kingston of Vermilion after a brief illness.

Judge Basinski was born August 27, 1937 in Elyria, OH and had been a Vermilion resident for the past 12 years, moving from Elyria.

He was a devoted husband, a kind and loving father and grandfather who enjoyed quality time with his family. An avid outdoorsman, he also enjoyed hunting, sailing, golf, and skiing.

He graduated from Borromeo Seminary High School, John Carroll University, and Western Reserve School of Law.

Judge Basinski was elected to the Lorain County Court of Common Pleas, Domestic Relations Division, in 1988. He also was a past-president of the Ohio Association of Juvenile and Family Court Judges, a member of the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges and of the Governor’s Task Force on Child Abuse. He served as co-chair of the Family Code Revision Task Force and co-chair of the Advisory Committee to the Ohio Supreme Court on Children, Families, and the Court. He earned his wings as a Naval Aviator, graduating Flight School in 1961, attaining the rank of Major in the Marine Corps.

He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Parish, Vermilion, Beaver Creek Hunt Club, United Polish Club of Elyria, Elyria Elks, Elyria Country Club, a founding member of Elyria Catholic Endowment Fund, and many other organizations. 

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Ellen (nee Naughton) Basinski of Vermilion; sons, David (Alice) Basinski of Copley, Daniel (Amy) Basinski of Amherst, Matthew (Cathy) Basinski of Lorain, Benjamin (Carri) Basinski of Avon Lake, and Michael Basinski of Elyria; grandchildren Alexander Peter, Caitlyn Ellen, Colin Joseph, Cassidy Lilliane, Victoria Marie, Gabrielle Bernice, Jeremy Naughton, Nicole Scout, Jack David, Addison Scout, Cayden Peter, Emma Jeanne, Grayson Edward, Michael Patrick, and Hadley Marsha; and his sisters, Dorothy Brock of Omaha, NE and Marilyn (Ron) Werner of Kernersville, NC.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Stanley and Bernice (nee Wilczak) Basinski and his infant brother, Donald Basinski.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, August 10, 2021 from 3-7 pm at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion, OH. Prayers will be said at the funeral home on Wednesday, August 11, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. followed by a 10:30 Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary Catholic Parish, 731 Exchange Street, Vermilion, OH. Father Jim Holmer will be the celebrant. Interment will follow at Brownhelm Cemetery in Vermilion with the Vermilion Veterans Council conducting Military Honors.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to: the Naughton-Basinski Scholarship Fund at Elyria Catholic High School, Elyria; the Blessing House of Lorain; or Birthright of Lorain County.
