Obituary of Edwin George Ziemke
Edwin George Ziemke, of Vermilion, ninety-six years of a life well lived, ended on Jan. 22, 2022 at Mill Manor.
Ed was loved and respected by his community, friends, former students, and family. He was born in Norwalk, Ohio on Sept. 3, 1925 and drafted into the US ARMY during his senior year of high school. Ed served during WWII as a member of the 36th Armored Infantry Regiment, 3rd Armored Division where he saw extensive combat on the beach of Normandy, and Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded two Battle Stars, WWII Victory medals, Combat Infantry Medal, and two Purple Hearts. After the war, he attended the College of Wooster and earned his teaching degree. While in college, he married the love of his life, Eileen. After graduation, Ed and Eileen began their married life in Kenton, Ohio where he took his first teaching and coaching position. Three years later, he moved to Vermilion as a teacher and Head Football and Basketball Coach at Vermilion High School. He went on to become the first Athletic Director. Ed was also a salesman for Ohio National Life Insurance.
Ed was an active member of the Vermilion Lion’s Club, Vermilion Park Board, Eight Ball Dance Club, Bridge Club, Men’s Choral Group, Vermilion Men’s Golf League, Bowling League, and E&R Evangelical Reformed Church of Christ where he served as a deacon. Ed and Eileen loved to travel, and were proud to have visited all 50 states, Europe, the Panama Canal, and many summers at their son’s cabin in Canada. He enjoyed fishing on his Lyman boat, smoking his pipe, spoiling Eileen, and volunteering for Meals on Wheels.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Marie Ziemke, three brothers Al, Don, and Jim; and a sister, Doris; his wife of 71 years, Eileen Mae (Stenger), and son-in-law Dave Mitchell.
He is survived by his daughter, Kathy Mitchell of Vermilion, a son, Michael (Michele) Ziemke of Huron; six grandchildren, Matt (Teresa) Mitchell, Jennifer (Michael) Kaffel, Alison (Joseph) Kleibschiedel, Janna (Omar) Rammuny, Amanda (Jeff) Grob, David Teasel; and 14 great grandchildren: Riley, Anthony, Tristan, Zaine, Grace, Audrey, Beckett, Joseph, Lylah, Rocky, Mitchell, Shepherd, Hudson, and Mary.

A celebration of Life for both Ed and Eileen will be at the Vermilion Boat Club on Sunday, June 5, 2022, with a memorial service at 1, and a reception to follow until 4. Inurnment will take place on Monday, June 6, 2022 at Maple Grove Cemetery at 1:00 p.m. with the Vermilion Veterans Council presenting Military Honors.
