Obituary of John Thomas Trinter
John Thomas Trinter, 83, of Vermilion, passed away Sunday, Feb. 6, 2022 at Mercy New Life Hospice after a lengthy illness.
He was born December 12, 1938 in Toledo, Ohio. He graduated from Vermilion High School in 1957 and Case Institute of Technology in 1961. After graduation he worked for Ernst and Ernst in the audit staff and as a consultant in Operations Research. John then enrolled in the Navy and graduated from officer candidate school. His first dry assignment after being commissioned was to attend the supply corps school in Athens, GA.
It was while he was in supply corps school that he met and befriended Ted Turner. Both John and Ted were equally infatuated with sailing, and this was a match made in heaven. With Ted on the tiller and John on the jib, they ran rough-shod over all competition. After finishing supply corps school, John spent a year and half on sea duty aboard the USS Vogelgesang as the supply officer. His final Navy assignment was at the Pentagon as the assistant to the Auditor General of the Navy. When discharged from the Navy, he returned to Vermilion to buy a Star Class sailboat and took a job at Center Manufacturing where he worked for 35 years as General Manager and President.
John had great success with sailing and won most of the regattas in which he participated. His proudest moment came as the winner of the 1968 Great Lakes Championship.
When it came time to hang up his sail bags, he moved to a family friendly powerboat and began to cruise the wilderness regions of Northern Canada. Family vacations were often spent exploring new regions. They have cruised all the rivers and canals north of a line from Montreal to Mackinac.
John was a member and past commodore of both Vermilion Boat Club and Vermilion Yacht Club.
John and his wife Nancy were fans of classical music and for several years had season tickets to the Cleveland Orchestra, and they rarely missed an Oberlin Orchestra concert. They were also fans of opera. John was awarded a certificate of appreciation from Bowling Green State University for bringing opera to the Firelands area.
He was a lifetime Francophile and especially relished his several trips to France, where he would stop in small towns and bask in the ambiance of French living. He enjoyed the fruits of the table, especially the cuisine of Burgundy and wines of the Medoc region of Bordeaux. He was a member of the Tasters Guild, Les Amis du Vin, Chaine des Rotisseurs and Commanderie de Bordeaux. A life well-lived.
He was a member of the United Church of Christ Congregational and a life member of AMVETS Post #22.
John was preceded in death by his wife of nearly 50 years, Nancy (nee Gerhart) Trinter; his father John A Trinter; his mother Elizabeth "Betty" Trinter (nee Shimansky); brother, Michael Karl Trinter and an infant brother, John A. Trinter.
He is survived by his son, Stephen Michael (Ann) Trinter of Eden Prairie, MN; daughter, Elizabeth Ann "Lisa" Trinter of Vermilion, OH; grandchildren, Paige and Cole Trinter; and his brothers, Timothy (Paula) Trinter of Vermilion and Dan (Lisa) Trinter of Wellington, OH.
