Obituary of Verna Mae Hardwick
Verna Mae Hardwick (nee Combest), 92, of Vermilion, left her home on February 12, 2022 at Mill Manor Nursing Home surrounded by family. She was greeted in heaven by her loving husband, Hobert of 55 years, family and friends.
She was born in Nancy, KY on October 21, 1929 to Ira Beecher and Mary Alta (nee Beasley) Combest. She moved to Ohio in 1951 and lived in South Amherst, then Birmingham for 50 years, living in Vermilion for the past 5 years.
After moving to Ohio, Verna worked various jobs. She was well know for her strong work ethic which got her a job at Lorain National Bank. She retired in 1992 after 25 years.
Verna was a woman of many talents. She was raised in a musical family and taught herself to play guitar. She played and sang on live radio broadcasts in Somerset and Columbia, Kentucky.
Verna and Hobert (The Professor) enjoyed going to Street Rod car meets with family and friends.
She was a watercolor artist and avid fisherwoman. She earned her Fish Ohio pin for catching perch and walleye. She loved to cook. Family and friends enjoyed her famous fried perch dinners.
Verna had faith in God that she lived out loud. She was active in church, singing in the choir, teaching Sunday School and was the church treasurer. She read her bible and shared the wisdom she gained with others.
Verna is survived by her son, Jerry (Nanci) Hardwick of Wakeman, daughters, Janice Hardwick and Joyce (Carl) Smith both of Vermilion; grandchildren, Jacqui (Chad) Hoffman, Renee (Bob) Case, Ryan (Cassie) Smith, Jenna (Scott) Hardwick; and her great grandchildren, Sophie and Quinn Hoffman, Rylie and Raegan Case, and Zachery and Owen Reighley.
Verna was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother, William Berlyn Combest; half brother, Ronald Hallmark; and her half sisters, Juanita Kasee and Mary Jackson.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2022 from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 12 Noon at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion, Ohio. Services will be live streamed at www.facebook.com/riddlefh. Interment will follow at Rugby Cemetery, Vermilion.
The family suggests memorial contributions to the donors favorite charity in Verna's name.
