Obituary of Edward Karl Schmidt
Edward Karl Schmidt, 95, of Vermilion, died Tuesday, February 15, 2022 surrounded with the love of his family.
He was born October 21, 1926 in Cleveland, Ohio and had been a life long Vermilion resident.
Ed was a veteran of the United States Navy during WWII, stationed on Guam. He was proud to serve our country.
Ed retired from the United Postal Service after 20+ years, he had walked a 20+ mile route for downtown Vermilion. He had previously done carpentry for Chuck Kishman, they built many homes in the Vermilion area. He also personally built the two homes that he and his family lived in, as well as helping his siblings and brother in law build their homes.
Ed was a member of St. Mary Catholic Parish in Vermilion. He belonged to the Knights of Columbus and served on church council. He was a member of VFW Post # 7576. He and Margaret were very active and loved the friendships they've made with the Fox Trak activity club. Ed loved music and enjoyed playing the organ. He was an excellent roller skater and did so for many years. He also liked to do physical labor.
He is survived by his loving wife of 72 years, Margaret (nee Brill) Schmidt of Vermilion; a son, Tom (Kathy) Schmidt of Vermilion; daughter, Janet Green of Vermilion; daughter in law, Vickie Schmidt of Lorain; grandchildren, Nicholas Sheridan, Katie (Brent) Picha and Mike Schmidt; great grandchildren, Aubreigh Sheridan and Slade Picha; sisters, Alice Barry of Oregon, Ohio, Carol (Ron) Baaske of Vermilion, Nancy (Dave) Gastin of Worthington; and his brothers, Gerry (Ginny) Schmidt of Vermilion, and Wayne (Marilyn) Schmidt of Wakeman.
He was preceded in death by his son, Kenneth John Schmidt in 2021; parents, Emil and Frances (nee Lipps) Schmidt; son in law, Jerome Green; daughter in law, Susan K Schmidt; and a grandson, Ty Schmidt.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, February 22, 2022, at 10 am until the time of Military honors and closing prayers at 1:00 pm at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion, Ohio. Memorial Mass will follow at 1:30 pm at St. Mary Catholic Parish, 731 Exchange Street, Vermilion. The Reverend Paul Schriener will officiate. Inurnment will be at a later date in Brownhelm Cemetery, Vermilion, OH.
